Customer.io is the tool you reach for when your user journey is more complex than an ecommerce funnel. Its event-driven architecture ingests any behavioral data you send and lets you build automation around any action: completed an assessment, health score dropped, reached day 7 without activating a feature. That flexibility is the whole point.

It's multi-channel (email, push, SMS, in-app), API-first, and refreshingly transparent on pricing — you can self-serve onto a paid plan and reason about what profiles and overages cost. For product-led SaaS and B2B teams, that combination is hard to beat.

Not for everyone
There's no native Shopify integration and a steeper learning curve than marketer-first tools. If your primary need is ecommerce email, Customer.io will feel over-engineered — Klaviyo is the better fit there.

Strengths

  • Unmatched event-driven flexibility — automate off literally any user action.
  • Strong multi-channel orchestration (email, push, SMS, in-app).
  • Transparent self-serve pricing you can reason about.
  • Excellent API maturity for engineering teams.

Watch-outs

  • No native Shopify integration; ecommerce needs custom work.
  • Steeper learning curve than marketer-first tools.
  • Can feel over-engineered for simple ecommerce email.

AI features

  • Natural-language segment building
  • AI content assistance
  • Send-time and journey optimization
